Poll

Hey, I could really use a little help here, guys. Please use the poll on the right to cast your vote, preferably immediately if not sooner, to have a hand in determining my office fate.

Since, probably not too much unlike you, I spend so many hours at the office everyday (nearly as long as I spend getting to and from said office), you can imagine that where one sits can be of utmost importance. If you’re not sure why, please follow this link.

I have been given the opportunity to move from where I currently sit (illustrated by the purple circle above; yep, that’s me right next to the front door) to another cube (demonstrated by a green circle in the same diagram). The big red box is the bosslady; blue dots are other souls who also currently find themselves confined to this workspace.

Noteworthy items regarding this potential move include:

- Green dot sits much closer (catty-corner) to bosslady.
- Bosslady must pass green dotted cube every time she leaves her desk (whereas in current, purple-dotted locale, bosslady may or may not pass depending on the exit door of her choice). Exit/entrance options are illustrated by red arrows.
- Green-dotted desk area is considerably smaller than purple-dotted desk area.
- Green-dotted desk area provides a considerable increase in privacy (it having 1/3 more walls, for example) yet is still kind of open.
- Green-dotted area offers escape from the baby canary-eating printer.
- Note that neither area is particulary distant from bosslady; diagram is not far from actual size.

Please do not be alarmed. I will, in no way, hold you or your families responsible for any future consequences of my actions (you know, unless they're good concequences, then I'll take you all for a carmel frap) . I am merely requesting your opinion. And thank you for your support.

The closer to the exit, the easer it is to leave. Stay put; however, if you move you can always see the bosslady leave, on the other hand just shoot spit balls at the green circles; eventually they will leave and you can have the mini prison of your choosing . -JW

I think you should move because she will be unlikely to look to the right every time she uses that exit - whereas in your current location, she has no choice but to look directly at you and your screen when heading to that exit. Anyway, having another wall is better for you as you can have more space to hang up pictures of people you'd rather be with and places you'd rather be (like a ghetto amusement park)

It is both good and bad to be by the boss. Proximity means you would get to hear her meetings and phone calls, conversation with other co-workers, and learn something that you might not know about her (both good and bad). It also gives you the opportunity to know when something is "up."

Down side is she gets to hear your phone calls and conversations with co-workers - wait I forgot you are not allowed to talk because you check your voicebox in at the door.

Has anyone else been offered the cube? What happened to the preivous occupant? If answers to any of those questions are at all negative (i.e. someone was offered the cube moved in and was exited in short order for "personal use of the internet") I would give a lot of thought to moving.

Keep your friends close and your enemies even closer.

Don't know if that helps...

It all depends on how many personal phone calls you make. You have already mastered the OTJ blogging, so it breaks down to how many phone calls you make on company time.

I would say stay put for now - maybe a better cube opportunity will present itself... also if it was your ipod battery that died you can send it back to apply and for 69.95 they will either refurbish or send you the same style new ipod - I just did this with seemingly ok results....

Just to clarify-- what few phonecalls I make/recieve during the work day, are nearly always done in the hallway, on my cell (as are everyone elses). Not too big on phones here.... or communication of any sort for that matter.

The previous occupant of this particular (green) cell block was one of the four people who have unceremoniously walked off the job in the months I have been here. I know for a fact that location of cube was not even in his top 25 major concerns.

Green cube was offered to the dude who sits behind me, prior to being offered to me (he also shares the two-wall-and-chomping-printer luxuries) but he turned down the opportunity to move. I asked him why and he said he was used to where he sits now. Hm.

First, whoever this 'judy' is, that's really cool if Apple does that and bear, I think that's a plan to plan...for the ipod.

Now, for your current situation.....

Neither are Blackjack, but this soft 17 is a pickle......The boss will definately be showing a face card more often if you move so the deck will have a lower number (if counting). With that being said, your current situation gives you more opportunities to pull high cards from the deck, but I you have to put in more money each time you play (day you show up).

I think the rule is to stay on a 17 if a face card is showing, no?

Eh. I'm no good at blackjack.

I dunno..I always just position my computer so that no one walks in behind me.. so either way could work, but i can see where the 3 walls would offer a little easier way about it.. and if the boss asks why you position your computer facing away from the opening to the cube, just say like i do "it bothers me when people walk behind me." that way, if she tries to fight it, you can say that it's a mental issue and that you are covered under the ADA and that the company must make reasonable accomodations. :)

I like Scott - whoever Scott is - I like the whole ADA thing.

I too (used to) like Scott, and he makes an excellent point. As do all of you.

Would less than a 4 hour commute also be included lawfully under "reasonable accomodations"?

Only problem is that I go to somewhat great lengths to keep my numerous "mental issues" from being apparant at the workplace.

This is largely why I have a blog.

c. 50 minutes in, baby! Let's see if ya can't just get back here in less than 3 hours =)! I have hopes

I've put some more though to this and i definately think you should get a screen protector (i.e., one of those things where only the person using the computer can see the monitor - we are given them for our laptops so we can work on planes). A lot of people use them because they are also "doctor recommended" for your eyes.

Or, like other prisons, maybe shiv the guy with the better cube and make the printer your bitch for a carton of smokes? Better yet, just move back to NY where the commutes are short and everyone gets a nice big office....

only with PWC, dwb. Other than that, I think cube-city is for most. Ask Ly.

Then again, what do I know. I have no office.

I like the shiv idea....the screen protector more.
